Diagnosis and Management of Ectopic Pregnancy

In a normal pregnancy, a fertilized egg goes via a fallopian tube to the uterus. The egg gets attached in the uterus and begins to grow. But what happens in the case of ectopic pregnancy is that, the fertilized gets attached to some other place other than the uterus, many a times in the fallopian tube. For this reason it is also known as tubal pregnancy. In rare cases, the egg gets attached in an ovary, belly or the cervix. There is no cure to ectopic pregnancy. It cannot be turned back into a normal one. It could be deadly if the egg keeps developing inside the fallopian tube, which can cause the tube to burst. A quick treatment to it is required to terminate it before it leads to dangerous problems.

Ectopic Pregnancy

There can be several causes of ectopic pregnancy. One of the few such reasons may be a damaged fallopian tube. In case of a bad fallopian tube, a fertilized may seek problems passing through the tube, causing the egg to attach itself and grow in the tube. Damage to the fallopian tube can be caused by various other reasons. One is being exposed to the DES chemical before birth. Smoking is another; higher smoking rate increases the risk of damage. Even medical treatments such as surgery on the fallopian tube can increase the chances of ectopic pregnancy.
